Utah Motorcycle Insurance

Prior to driving a motorcycle in Utah, you need to get an insurance policy that can give you adequate coverage. With all cars/trucks Utah requires that your insurance coverage include Personal Injury Protection (no-fault medical coverage) of at least $3,000. However, with motorcycles, Utah has no such requirement. Therefore, if you have a Utah motorcycle insurance policy, you likely have inadequate insurance and especially lacking medical payment coverage.

Insurance Requirements

All motor vehicles driven on Utah roads require insurance.

Bodily Injury Liability: The state requires its motorcycle drivers to have an insurance policy that can pay at least $25,000 per person and $65,000 per accident. With this insurance policy, it covers not just the insurance policy owner but also other people who are injured in an accident where you’re at fault.

Property Damage Liability: You need to purchase an insurance that covers at least $15000 in property damage liability. When you have this insurance coverage, it can pay for any property damage you cause to another person up to that $15,000.

Other Options

Although they are not required by the law, you can try these options for better insurance coverage.

Comprehensive Coverage: This type of insurance provides coverage for losses that are not related to collision. For instance, if someone stole your vehicle or if there is a fire incident, you are covered.

Collision Coverage: This type of coverage provides protection for damages brought about by a collision with either a stationary object or any other vehicle.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage:This is tied for the most important type of coverage that you can have (along with Uninsured Motorist Coverage). If you or a passenger on your bike are injured because of the negligence of another and that person has inadequate insurance to fully and adequately compensation you for your loses, then your own Underinsured Motorist Coverage steps in and picks up the bill up to the amount that you have purchased. If you have passengers on your motorcycle, this is the insurance policy that can cover the costs if ever there are injuries to them but there is not enough insurance on the other side.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage: Similar to Underinsured Motorist Coverage, Uninsured Motorist Coverage protects motorcyclists when they are injured by a person who does not have insurance or in the event of a hit-and-run.

Don’t get caught without sufficient coverage for both Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage. We recommend that each person has a MINIMUM of 100,000 in both types of coverage (preferably more). Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage are the two types of insurance that step in and ultimately protect you no matter what the other party has with regards to their insurance. It is the way that you can ensure you are protected regardless of the situation. Please give Injury Defenders a call and we can discuss these types of coverage. Make sure you get them before it is too late.

Things to Consider

Getting an insurance policy is required under the law. Although there are specific requirements, it does not hurt to include additional coverage especially if your motorcycle is your main form of transportation. Happy riding!
